It has powerful anti-inflammatory benefits, similar to NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) by inactivating the COX, Cyclooxygenase enzyme which is the pain relieving mechanism behind phenylbutazone, aspirin, and ibuprofen, firocoxib. Clinical studies have confirmed an increase in pain relief for 60% of patients with an osteoarthritic hip or knee. The active component in Devil’s Claw is harpagophytum, which not only has pain relieving benefit, but is an appetite stimulant and will increase gastric secretions which could benefit horses with poor appetite and body condition, however not recommended for a horse being treated for gastric or hind gut ulcers or pregnant mares.
